LOS ANGELES, Calif. – With a spot in the MPSF tournament semifinals on the line, the Concordia men's volleyball team headed to Pauley Pavilion to take on second-seeded UCLA for the second time in two weeks. The Eagles battled but the Bruins earned the 3-0 victory to end the season for CUI.
Making his postseason debut,
Luke Krzmarzick led the way for the Eagles with 10 kills and hit .348. He also posted three blocks alongside senior
Hunter Howell who had a match-high six and had four kills as well. Libero
Addison Enriques had 10 digs to lead the team, including four in the first set.
The Eagles started off well, scoring the first three points of the match. Teams traded points, with Concordia retaking the lead at 11-10 after back-to-back
Jordan Hoppe points. Trailing 21-17, kills from
Raymond Barsemian and Howell brought CUI within one. Consecutive points from the Bruins closed out the set 25-21.
Howell got the Eagles back on track to start set two, putting down a kill and sending back two Bruin attacks. Errors from UCLA allowed Concordia to consistently sideout and back-to-back kills from Krzmarzick gave the Eagles its largest lead at 18-12. Barsemian dished out a kill and an ace to put his team up 23-17 until tough serving from the Bruins allowed an 8-0 run to steal the set.
Concordia held with UCLA, following behind at 8-7.
Isaiah Kaaa checked in and made an immediate impact to help the Eagles go on a 6-2 run, to come within one at 18-17. The senior collected three digs and set up two of his teammates to success. The momentum shifted in favor of the Bruins, going in their favor to end the match, 25-17.
Concordia ends the season with a 14-19 overall record with four all-conference honorees.
