IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's water polo team was tasked with the challenge of trying to hand No. 8 University of Pacific its first conference loss of the season on Saturday.
Â
Unfortunately, the Tigers did not make many mistakes and scored the first three goals to create some early breathing room. The Eagles battled but the Tigers were locked in and cruised to a 20-3 road victory at Northwood H.S.
Â
Sophomore
Dailynn Santoro found the back of the net in the first quarter on the power play to get the Eagles on the board. But CUI trailed 6-1 as the two squads started the second quarter sprint.
Â
Ramsie Haskell found
Lindsey Heaney for another tally in the second to trim the deficit to 9-2. But the Eagles still trailed by eight at intermission, 10-2.
Â
Hanna Jordan added a goal for the Green and Gold in the third quarter off a nice pass from Haskell. But Pacific's offense was clicking on all cylinders and the Eagles were unable to string together consecutive scores. Kyra Christmas and Toula Falvey each led the way with four goals apiece for Pacific, which has now won all six of its Golden Coast Conference matches.
Â
Haskell and
Mauriama Moore each finished with two steals for the Eagles.
Â
CUI goalies
Siena Goggia and
Kiara Espeleta also made appearances in the pool and each collected a save in the second half. Senior
Ariana Olmos started the contest and made two stops in the first half.
Â
Concordia's next home match will be its last of the regular season. The Eagles will welcome Fresno State to Woollett Aquatics Center on Friday, April 19 at 1:30 p.m. It will also be Senior Day for the Green and Gold.
