SURPRISE, Ariz. – Concordia University Irvine freshman Yassine Smiej was recognized for his fine play on Wednesday as he was named Second Team All-PacWest by the league's coaches.

In his first year on campus, the Rabat, Morocco native shined in the spotlight on a very senior-laden team.  Smiej competed regularly at the No. 1 singles position, excelling as he got more comfortable against PacWest competition.  Smiej won his first five singles matches of the year and won three of his last four at the No. 1 singles spot.  In addition, he teamed with senior Thomas Kyle to win eight times in doubles. Smiej was also one of only two freshmen to make Second Team All-Conference. 

The end-of-the-year league award announcements were made at the annual PacWest banquet as teams from the entire conference converge on Surprise, Ariz. to compete for the 2019 PacWest Tennis Championships. Coaches vote on the top 18 singles players and the top nine doubles pairings throughout the conference which make up the three all-conference teams.

Ghazal Pakbaten and Johanna Keeline of the Concordia women's tennis team were also honored by the PacWest Conference on Wednesday.  The women defeated Biola 5-0 on Wednesday to advance to the women's tennis quarterfinals. The CUI women eventually finished in seventh place at the PacWest Championships after defeating Fresno Pacific in the consolation bracket on Saturday.

Smiej and the CUI men's tennis team ultimately finished in fourth place at the PacWest Championships after upsetting No. 4 seed Sonoma State.
