OAKLAND, Calif. - After playing less than 24 hours ago, the Concordia University Irvine women's volleyball team rounded out their two game series out in the Bay Area against Holy Names. The Eagles were able to overcome the Hawks winning in a close four set match, securing a record of 7-4 and 1-2 in the PacWest conference.
An ace from
Julia DenBoer and kill from
Riley Gill gave the Eagles a 9-6 lead over the Hawks in the first set. CUI was able to sustain their two point lead and keep HNU from going on runs to put them in the lead, finishing the set by a close 25-23 win holding HNU to a hitting percentage of .098.
Brianna Latigue started things out for the Eagles in the second set, going on a six point run while collecting two aces and kills from
Hannah Tostado and
Patience O'Neal. A few errors from CUI let HNU back in the game and would run with it, taking the second set by another close score 23-25.
In the third set, a couple kills from
Gracie Rowland extended the lead for the Eagles to a score 11-6. The Hawks rallied and were able to come within two points, until
Kailyn Case went on a three point service run and the Eagles did not look back and took the set with another score of 25-23. In the fourth set, the Eagles ran with their momentum from the third set with Latigue's service run again and a kill from Rowland to close out the match with a comfortable 25-16 win.
Gill had another strong match as she tallied 15 kills to go along with 18 digs.
Cambria Fernandez had seven kills with no errors for a hitting percentage of .368. Latigue recorded 27 assists and 12 digs while contributing four aces. Case was right behind Latigue with 20 assist and two aces. DenBoer had another double digit night, collecting 17 digs in the four set dual.
Jaclyn Brown was solid in the back row with 18 digs and three kills.
NEXT: The Eagles will continue their conference play on the road next week against Fresno Pacific on Thursday, September 26 at 6 p.m. and Biola on Saturday, September 28 at 7 p.m.
