Eagles Score 10 Runs In Season Opener

DOMINGUEZ HILLS, Calif. - The Concordia University Irvine baseball team opened its season on the road Friday against California State University Dominguez Hills with an 11-10 loss.

The Eagles racked up seventeen hits in the afternoon matinee, as there was no shortage of offense on either side.

Three Eagles finished the game with three hits.

Preseason All PacWest Selection, senior shortstop Haloa Dudoit finished with three hits, one walk, one RBI, and one run scored.  His RBI single in the second inning plated catcher Tony Garcia III for the Eagles first run of the 2020 season.

Infielder Shane Schick entered the game as a replacement and made an immediate impact in his Eagles debut.  He finished the afternoon with three hits, two RBI, and one run scored. His first at-bat as an Eagle resulted in an RBI single, to bring the Eagles within one.

Garcia finished with three hits, one walk, one RBI, and one run scored.  The senior's two-run double in the top of the seventh put the Eagles in front 7-6.

After four innings of play, the Eagles found themselves in a 6-1 hole and in need of some offense.  Over the course of the next three innings, they scored seven unanswered runs to capture the lead 8-6.

In the top of the eighth, Schick and Garcia extended the Eagles lead. Schick supplied a RBI single and Garcia added a RBI double to make it 10-7 Eagles.

However, the Toros scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to capture the lead and ultimately the win.

Head coach Joe Turgeon knows that his teams let one get away but also knows that one loss will not define his team and their season.

"The team played hard and competed well but we just gave away too much to win the game today," said Turgeon.  "It's hard to win on the road so to have that one slip away hurts but we have a resilient group that I'm sure will be in a good mindset to play tomorrow.

The Eagles are back in action Saturday as they take on the Toros in game two of the three game series.
