IRVINE, Calif. - The Concordia Irvine men and women's tennis squads put on their best winning suits to take victories over the PacWest Conference rival Biola Eagles.
Â
The men of the Green and Gold took a 4-3 victory, while the women of CUI won their match 5-2.
Â
Concordia's men's team struggled in their doubles match-ups, but found a way to overcome their adversity in the singles. Freshman standouts Marlon Wilken and Patrick Wong continued their strong performances in singles coming up with two victories for the Irvine Eagles.
Â
The other two match winners for the Green and Gold came from junior, Jan Simon and lone senior, Otto Heinz.Â
Â
"I was very proud of the way we were able to push through today's match after yesterday's battle with UCSD," said head coach Jonathan Sanchez. "It was obvious that our team was exhausted but dug deep and persevered pulling out some very close matches in singles clinching the win for us. The standout of the match was Marlon Wilken, who saved 5 match points to end up winning the match 6-0 in the third set and clinching the win for Concordia. Biola played extremely tough so we will need to keep improving and be prepared for our next match with them."
Â
For the CUI Eagles women's tennis team they found success early on taking the victory in the doubles matchups. The graduate student, Rebekah Anderson paired with junior teammate, and 2019 PacWest Conference selection Ghazal Pakbaten to earn the doubles notch for the Green and Gold with the match score of 6-4.
Â
The other match that won for Concordia came from Lisa Suzuki and Taylor Lau. The impressive duo put on a show for the battle, taking the victory 6-2.
Â
The singles matchups featured wins from Anderson, Lou Perrot, Suzuki, and Lau giving the Irvine squad an overall victory of 5-2 over the Eagles of Biola.
Â
"We started a little slow going into doubles but in the end were able to pull out the doubles point," said Sanchez. "I was pleased with the way the women were able to pick up their energy in the singles matches to secure the match win. The standout players of the match were Lisa Suzuki and Taylor Lau. The pair played some spectacular doubles being first off the doubles court with a win for the Eagles as well as being the first two off the courts with singles wins."
