IRVINE, Calif. - Freshman standout for Concordia Irvine's men's tennis team,
Patrick Wong was honored with PacWest Player of the Week.
Â
In the week's action for Wong, the Taipei, Taiwan native won both of his singles matches against Point Loma Nazarene and Sonoma State. Wong was noted as the standout
player of the day in the victory over PLNU by head coach
Jonathan Sanchez for winning straight sets to tie the score up 1-1 against the Sealions.
Â
Wong then followed up his performance with wins in both the singles and doubles matches against the Seawolves of Sonoma State. The freshman duo of Wong and
Marlon Wilken powered through their match and won 6-4.
Â
In the singles sets for the freshman phenom, Wong made the match very interesting by falling in the first set to then bounce back and take the next two sets for the victory point for the Green and Gold.
Â
"I am quite honored to have been chosen for PacWest Player of the Week amongst many other players," said Wong. "It has been a great start to the season for myself as well as my team. It is a great time to be an Eagle!"
Â
With help from freshman standouts Wong and Wilken as well as veteran leadership from
Jan Simon,
Otto Heinz, Joel Ockernal, and last season's PacWest Conference Selection
Yassine Smiej, the Eagles are off to their hottest start since 2010 with a 6-1 record and a national ranking of #23.
Â
"Patrick has shown significant growth not only as an athlete but as a leader," said head coach Sanchez. "His success this week is attributed to his fighting spirit and positivity. He had to battle some very difficult matches but was able to persevere. I think this can also be said about the team in general, which is why we have had such a strong start to the season. Our team has never been closer and everyone is playing for each other out there. Our goal is to continue pushing each other to be a little better everyday."
Â
CUI will look to capture win number 100 for coach Sanchez in their next match on Saturday. Feb. 29th at 12:00 p.m. at the Tennis Courts at Newport Beach.
