No. 10 CUI Starts Hawaii Trip With Two Wins

KANEOHE, Hawai'i – The Concordia University Irvine softball squad extended its winning streak to eight on Thursday after scooping up a pair of victories over Hawaii Pacific.

No. 10 CUI (10-1, 4-0 PacWest) opened up its 12-game road trip through the islands by using all four pitchers in the doubleheader and getting three hits apiece on the day from Megan Massa, Michelle Lieng and catcher Mackenzie Graham.

Game 1: CUI 7, HPU 1

Junior pitcher Callie Nunes improved to 4-0 on the season by tossing five shutout innings in Thursday's 7-1 victory for the Eagles. She held the Sharks (7-5, 2-2 PacWest) to only two hits while striking out seven batters and working around four walks. Erika Morris provided two more innings on the hill, and only allowed one unearned run to cross the plate.

Graham caught the entire game for Nunes and Morris and was locked in at the plate. The senior supplied three singles and knocked in the first run of the game when Lieng scored on a base knock in the top of the second inning. Lieng scored twice in the opening game and also connected for a triple.

Massa went 2-for-4 in game one with a walk. Her RBI single in the fourth put the Eagles up 4-0 which was enough cushion to back Nunes and Morris on the mound.

Game 2: CUI 8, HPU 2

In the second part of Thursday's doubleheader, freshman Rae Flores limited the Sharks to just two hits over the course of 3.2 scoreless innings. Flores walked ten batters but amazingly never allowed a single run to cross the plate on her watch.

Senior pitcher Jordan Quinn pitched 1.1 innings to help close things out for the Eagles.

"Proud of our effort and our pitchers were good all day," said CUI head coach Crystal Rosenthal. "In game two, Rae threw very well in a very tough zone and I was proud of her ability to deal with adversity."

After scratching together three runs in the top of the first inning, CUI senior Amanda Gjertsen took matters into her own hands. Gjertsen doubled to center in the fourth which sent Lauren Lopez home and gave CUI a 1-0 lead. That same inning, Lieng provided a RBI double of her own which scored Haylee Kloosterman.

CUI finished the day with two road victories, 15 runs and 17 hits. All in all a very productive day at the plate.

"Our offense was good and did a good job keeping us on our pace," added Rosenthal.

The Eagles will continue their road swing in Hawaii with a pair of games against the Sharks on Friday afternoon. The first game of the PacWest doubleheader begins at 3 p.m (P.T).
