Nunes Powers Eagles To Third Win Over Sharks

IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 10 Concordia Eagles won their series with Hawaii Pacific by splitting their Friday doubleheader after already notching two road wins over the Sharks on Thursday.

Concordia stretched its winning streak to nine games before HPU rallied and avoided the sweep. Amanda Gjertsen went 4-for-7 at the plate over the course of the day with a double, two runs scores and a RBI.

Game 1: CUI 3, HPU 0

The Eagles won the first game of the day behind a stellar pitching performance by All-American Callie Nunes. The Modesto, Calif. native improved to 5-0 with a complete game shutout. Nunes finished with seven strikeouts as well.

CUI was able to carve out a couple timely runs to go up 2-0 after three frames. Alyssa Turner added a RBI single in the sixth for some insurance. Pinch-runner Brooke Jackson scored off of the hit to make it 3-0.

"Callie threw well in game one and Mackenzie Graham had a good game behind the plate as well which kept her in a nice rhythm," said CUI head coach Crystal Rosenthal.

Game 2: HPU 7, CUI 4

Lauren Lopez and Gjertsen each supplied two hits in the second contest. Lopez's RBI single in the third helped CUI go up 1-0 before Gjertsen doubled the lead by doubling down the left field line.

Graham added a solo home run to put CUI up 3-2 in the top of the fourth. However, the CUI offense only managed to scrape one more run together the rest of the way. When Megan Massa singled up the middle in the sixth, McKinsey Thorpe was able to come around and score.

But ultimately, the Sharks sliced their way to a 7-4 win to avoid the series sweep.

"Overall, we are not playing with consistent energy and effort so until we get to that point we cannot compete at a level that will put us in a place to win at the highest level," said Rosenthal.
