KANEOHE, Hawaii – Rain over the weekend limited No. 10 Concordia University Irvine and Chaminade to just one softball game Sunday, but the Eagles were happy to get to play when they did.
Â
The two squads were able to play half of their originally scheduled PacWest doubleheader by moving from Chaminade's home field to Hawaii Pacific University. The Eagles had just played four games at HPU
where they went 3-1 to start their 12-game road trip out on the Islands.
Â
The appropriately named
Sydney Sprinkle had two doubles to lead the CUI offense. However, the lone run of the game came in the top of the fourth inning off an error.
CUI senior
Alyssa Turner drew a leadoff walk after fouling off a couple pitches before pinch-runner
Julianna Covarrubias moved to second on a passed ball. Senior shortstop
Sarah Kretschmar then placed down a sacrifice bunt but Chaminade's third baseman was unable to make the play and Covarrubias scored on the error to put the Eagles in front 1-0.Â
That wound up being the only run of the day scored by either team because the Silverswords pitching staff was able to dodge further damage and the Eagles had their ace on the mound in junior
Callie Nunes.
 Â
After cruising for most of the afternoon, Nunes wiggled her way out of trouble in the seventh inning after allowing a two-out double and a walk. The junior struck out her eighth batter of the game to finish off the Silverswords and keep them off the scoreboard. She allowed only two doubles and walked just two batters.
The two-hitter was the third complete game shutout of the season for Nunes and her second already on this road trip through Hawaii. Despite both her success and her team's success, the junior was motivated to be even better in the future.
"I didn't have my best stuff today by a long shot," said Nunes, "so all I could do was work through it and make sure to put the ball just in enough or just out enough to get the ball to my defense who I knew would get the out."Â
"Callie didn't have her best stuff but really gutted out a win for us and made some big pitches to get us a win," said CUI head coach
Crystal Rosenthal.
Â
Nunes owns a 1.02 ERA this year and now has 44 career complete games which ranks fifth all-time in CUI softball history.
The Eagles resume play on Monday against Chaminade as both teams look forward to getting in two more PacWest contests.
