Eagles Deliver Turgeon Career Win No. 100

CUI Tops Holy Names in First PacWest Doubleheader

IRVINE, Calif. – It was a memorable Friday for the Eagles as their first PacWest Conference doubleheader of the year included a four-hit outing by a young outfielder, a final out at the plate by the defense, and an impressive milestone for their skipper.

Concordia defeated Holy Names 4-2 in game one of the series behind some stellar defense and a solid pitching effort from Brett Vansant. In the second game, Cooper Moore and Calvin Schonebaum led the CUI offense and helped head coach Joe Turgeon secure career win No. 100.

"I'm extremely proud of them and it's just as much their 100 th win and this coaching staff's as well if not more than mine," said Turgeon. "I don't ever take credit for the win. A lot of these players and coaches have been here the whole time. However many losses, I'll take credit for those next to my name."

The Green and Gold (12-5, 2-0 PacWest) improved to 9-1 at home this season at newly renovated Eagles Field.

Game One: CUI 4, Holy Names 2

Starting pitcher Brett Vansant pitched a superb game to set the tone against the Hawks. He struck out the side in the second inning and finished with seven K's in 7.0 innings. The tall right-hander allowed only one earned run and four hits during his stint. Isaiah Bettencourt and lefty Chase Lyford combined to limit the Hawks to just one more run over the course of the next two frames.

"I thought it started with Brett Vansant and how he competed on the mound," said Turgeon. He was able to throw all four of his pitches with his fastball, curveball, slider and change. He was able to jump out with strike one which is vital for the team. He started the day off for us with the tempo and the defense followed suit."

Moore laced a RBI triple to right center to plate Matt Lautz and open the scoring in the bottom of the first. Schonebaum then pushed Moore home with a RBI single to right. Shane Hersh and Bailey Collins would each tack on a sacrifice fly later to give Concordia a cushion that would hold until the end.

Game Two: CUI 11, Holy Names 6

The Eagles got many important contributions in the second contest of the day but Calvin Schonebaum stood out at the plate. The sophomore smacked a RBI single in the fourth inning to get the Eagles on the board after they had fallen behind 3-0.

Then with CUI down 3-2 in the fifth, Schonebaum tied the game by knocking in Shane Hersh with a RBI single to left. The Parker, Colo. native followed that up with a bases-clearing, three-run double to the gap in right field.  He finished with a career-high four hits in this game and with five total base knocks on the day.

Cooper Moore added an exclamation point in the bottom of the eighth when he went yard for his fifth homer of the season. His two-run blast rounded out the scoring.

"Our offense is pretty potent and it's hard to keep them down for a long time," added Turgeon. "There is a lot of experience in that lineup and they were able to make a lot happen. They played extremely fast and extremely hard."

The Eagles are in the middle of a stretch where they play 17 of 20 games at home.
Their next outing is back at Eagles Field on Saturday, Feb. 29 against the Hawks before taking the field again on Tuesday, March 2 against Westcliff.
