Home Cookin' - Eagles Fly Past Hawks

IRVINE, Calif. – Behind stellar pitching and a balanced attack on offense, the Concordia University Irvine Eagles improved to 11-1 at home with a pair of PacWest Conference wins over Holy Names University.

Five different Eagles tallied at least two hits in the early game to help CUI win comfortably. A dominant pitching performance in the second game of the day proved to also favor the Green and Gold.

Game 1: CUI 13, HNU 4

The Eagles (14-5, 4-0 PacWest) tweaked their lineup slightly to attack some matchups and it worked in their favor.

Catcher Juan Zuniga started the scoring with a RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. Philip Quartararo also made the start at first base in game one and capitalized on his opportunities. After primarily pinch-hitting to start the year, Quartararo went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI and a run scored. His two-run single in the fourth made it 8-1 Eagles.

On top of all of that, CUI centerfielder Matt Lautz smashed a three-run homer in the fourth to put the Eagles up 11-1 over the Hawks (3-8, 0-4 PacWest).

Bailey Collins primarily plays first base but Saturday he started game one in left field. It didn't seem to impact his bat at all, as the senior connected for a team-high three hits and scored three times. Collins leads CUI with the highest batting average (.359) and also the bet on-base-percentage (.524) this season.

With the offense manufacturing a ton of runs, there was less pressure on the pitchers.  Mike Killeen (2-1) tossed five solid innings and struck out two while only allowing one earned run and five hits. Reliever Matt Williams followed Killeen and pitched the final four innings.

Game 2: CUI 6, HNU 1

Jimmy Endersby pitched a gem of a game for the Eagles in the finale of the four-game series. The right-hander struck out seven over the course of seven innings while only allowing one run to score on a solo homer. The former Cal State Fullerton pitcher improved to 4-0 by pitching a complete game and helping the Eagles pull off the sweep.

"Today was a complete day from the mound, with Killeen and Endersby leading the way," said CUI head coach Joe Turgeon. "Getting four quality starts this weekend was a big part of our success."

CUI's offense in game two was bolstered by designated hitter Cooper Moore. After picking up a couple hits in the first game of the day, Moore unleashed a violent swing in the second inning and belted a solo shot over the centerfield wall.

The senior from Huntington Beach, Calif. later added a RBI double in the sixth to extend CUI's lead to 6-0. Those two swings by Moore were crucial in giving Concordia the confidence needed to get to the finish line iwth a win.

Jair Donovan also collected 3 RBI in game two. He reached on a fielder's choice that plated freshman Derek Delgado and also contributed a two-run single in the fourth.

"The offense was also able to apply pressure nearly every inning and we were tough outs," added Turgeon. "I'm very pleased with how we continue to play for each other and fight for every pitch."

Concordia returns to action on Tuesday when the Green and Gold host Westcliff at 2 p.m. for a non-conference game.
