IRVINE, Calif. - The Concordia University Irvine women's water polo squad opened up conference play by hosting No. 16 San Diego State on Friday afternoon.
Five different Eagles net goals in the matinee between Golden Coast Conference foes. However, the Aztecs were able to string together a few runs and converted 18 of their 29 shots to pull away for an 18-5 road victory.
Josie Miller and
Jade Jette opened the scoring in the first quarter for the Eagles. Jette's tally came on the power play.
Despite constant pressure from Concordia, San Diego State (7-8 overall, 1-0 GCC) built a 7-2 lead after the opening period and never trailed.Â

Lindsey Heaney each found the back of the net once in the second quarter. Newcomers
Lily Riley and
Billie Nel teamed up in the third quarter for a goal when Nel fed Riley in front of the net.
Kiara Espeleta racked up nine saves and collected one steal for the Green and Gold.
The loss snapped CUI's three-game winning streak. The Eagles (3-3 overall, 0-1 GCC)Â return to action in the pool on Friday, March 6 against Occidental College in the Convergence Tournament.
