Eagles Pull Away From Penguins

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Playing without one of their starters, the short-handed Eagles found a way to not only win, but post a convincing win at Dominican on Thursday evening.

Concordia University Irvine led by 13 at halftime and opened up a 39-point lead at one juncture, coasting to a comfortable 83-47 victory.

Cameron English started in place of the injured Jalen Sanders and contributed 16 points and eight rebounds to help the cause. The Oregon native was a matchup problem for the Penguins and scored four straight buckets at one point to help seal the victory but he had help. Andre Green exploded for a team-high 21 points, Robert McCoy added 15 and senior point guard Jamel White scored 10 to pace the offense.

McCoy scored the first two buckets of the game to start things off right and put up 13 of his 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting before intermission. Green also shot a high percentage and converted five of his first six field goals. For Green, his 21 points were his second-highest point total of the season and the 15th time he has scored in double figures.

"I was just focused on getting the best shots possible and my teammates were setting me up for great looks," said Green.

CUI then locked down on defense in the second half, limiting the Penguins to just 33 percent shooting. Conversely, the Eagles ended the night shooting at a 54 percent clip from the floor.

"Jamel and Andre did a great job in the start of the second half with their energy and pressure on their talented guards," said CUI head coach Ken Ammann. "Having Jalen out for an indefinite amount of time is a big loss and our guys did a great job trying to fill the void and get in sync together. We were very focused in the second half and it really showed on both ends shooting the ball well and getting a lot done on the defensive end as well."

Four different Eagles came up with at least two steals. Kayle Knuckles led the way with three picked pockets, while Green, White and Kyle Gray each had two. Another testament to the great defense played by the Eagles was that Dominican only converted two treys the entire evening.

"The first half we kind of let them do what they wanted in spurts but we really came together in the second half and dominated on that side of the ball," said Green. "We came at them with more focus and intensity and that's really what turned the game into a blowout."

Concordia returns to action this Saturday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. on the road against Holy Names University. The Eagles will visit the Hawks to close out their time up in NorCal and then return for a three-game homestand, beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 12 against Hawai'i Pacific.
