CUI Athletics Events Cancelled For Remainder of 2019-20 Academic Year

IRVINE, Calif. – Due to the nature of the current climate, in order to protect the safety and integrity of our student-athletes, Concordia University Irvine administration has decided that as of Friday, March 13, 2020 all CUI competitions are canceled for the rest of the 2019-2020 academic year. This includes CUI games, events and practices.

On Thursday, the NCAA announced it had cancelled all winter and spring championships for this school year. Also on Thursday, the PacWest Conference decided to suspend all competition through at least March 30.

Here is the statement from the PacWest Conference:

By agreement of its member schools, the Pacific West Conference is suspending all athletic competition effective immediately, at least through March 30. The decision was reached by the conference with the health and safety of the student-athletes, game day workers, athletic staffs and community in mind. The PacWest will continue to monitor and assess the situation and provide updates as they are made available.

**UPDATE** - On March 16, 2020, the PacWest Conference announced that the league "had canceled the remainder of conference competition and championships as well as all countable athletics-related activities through the end of the 2020 spring national championships."

The Concordia women's water polo team competes in the Golden Coast Conference and the Concordia men's volleyball squad is a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).

Late Thursday afternoon, the MPSF also released a similar statement canceling upcoming events:

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), in consultation with our five charter conferences (Big West, MWC, Pac-12, WAC and WCC) is immediately canceling all remaining winter sports competition including championships and is indefinitely suspending all spring sports competition including conference, non-conference and championships competition.

Given the dynamic nature of the COVID-19 virus and the fluidity of containment efforts, it is absolutely necessary that the MPSF collaborate with our greater NCAA community to minimize the spread and overall impact of the coronavirus pandemic. As always, we remain committed to the safety and well-being of our student-athletes, campus staff and all others who contribute to the MPSF.

Two members of the CUI swimming and diving team were competing in Geneva, Ohio at the NCAA DII Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday and Thursday before that event was canceled. To read more about the abbreviated appearances at nationals for Kyle Benjamin and Katelyn Thomas, click here.

CUI senior Tamia Prince had also qualified in the 60m hurdles for the NCAA DII Indoor Track and Field Championships and was set to compete in Birmingham, Alabama this week before the NCAA made the decision to cancel the event.

Our hearts go out to all our CUI seniors and we are very sorry for this unprecedented and unorthodox situation.  Thank you for representing our school, our athletics department and your teams with class and for everything you have contributed. No matter what the future holds, we are honored to have you as a part of our Eagle Family.
