CLAREMONT, Calif. - After falling to San Diego State for the conference home opener, the Eagles looked to bounce back at the Convergence tournament hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. CUI started off playing Occidental and Whittier today and took home two wins, winning by scores 17-7 and a close 13-12.
Concordia 17, Occidental 7
Valerie Pedersen started things off for the Eagles with the first goal scored in the first quarter along with four other players. The Eagles were able to hold the Tigers to only one goal in the first quarter to go along with the Eagles five scored. Both teams scored six goals in the following two quarters, with CUI still in the lead 11-7. In the fourth quarter, the green and gold scored another six goals while not allowing the Tigers to score one goal in the last quarter, winning 17-7. The Eagles were 4-for-7 with powerplays and out shot the Tigers 30-18.
Lindsey Heaney led the Eagles with four goals.
Madison Ravelo and
Elena Isogawa followed right behind with three a-piece and one assist each.
Lily Riley had five steals alone in the game and Ravelo with four during the duration of the game.
Kiara Espeleta started in the net with five saves and allowing four goals.
Emily Esteban finished in the net for the green and gold allowing three goals and three saves.
Concordia 13, Whittier 12
The Eagles took a 4-2 at the end of the first quarter with four different Eagles scoring. In the second quarter the rolls were reversed with the Poets scoring four goals and the Eagles two, going into the half with a tied score 6-6. CUI came out of the half scoring another four goals in the quarter, taking the lead yet again by a close score 10-8. Whittier scored four goals in the last quarter, however Concordia was able to hold the Poets, taking the win by a close score 13-12.
Heaney led with another four goals in this game while
Dailynn Santoro and Ravelo both scored three goals each and two steals. Espeleta was the starting goalkeeper and played the whole game at the net, saving seven shots on goal throughout the game.
Concordia will finish the Convergence tournament tomorrow playing another two matches against Chapman at 9 a.m. followed by LMU at 12:45 p.m. Conference play will continue at Santa Clara on Saturday Mar. 14 at 12 p.m.
