Women's Basketball Stumps APU in Back-to-Back Games

AZUSA, Calif. – CUI women's basketball defeated No. 19 APU back-to-back days.

Concordia women's basketball is now 4-2 overall and 3-1 in conference with this sweep over APU. The Eagles took charge during the first half and headed into the locker room with a 6-point lead, 39-33. Azusa Pacific made some changes during their halftime break and came out to win the third quarter 24-13. The Eagles knew they needed the momentum back in their favor and they did just that.  They held the Cougars to just 10 points in the fourth quarter and scored 23 themselves. The end result was 75-67 for the Eagles.

Katie Timmerman led the Eagles with 20 points and 5 assists.  She shot an incredible 50% from the field as well as from behind the arc, and to top it off shot 100% from behind the line.
"I've started to learn to just let the game and the flow of it come naturally and not try to over emphasize or force things," said Timmerman. "Having such a versatile team where anyone can score alleviates that pressure and opens the floor up to the point where it's easy to pick apart the defense and put my teammates in positions to score. For my shooting I came into today a lot looser, more confident, and just let my body take over and do its thing. I knew my shots were due to fall so I just had to have trust in that and let the opportunities come to me. My teammates and coaches were also supportive and gave me that little boost I needed to get me going."

Camryn Kiernan, a freshman starter, also shot 50% for the trey ball and has come in and made some key baskets for the Eagles. Kiernan is a momentum changer on both the offensive and defensive end. During this season she has constantly deflected the ball and put pressure on the offense with her determination and work ethic.

"When it comes to what motivates me on the defensive end, it's definitely my teammates," said Kiernan. "I do my best to be a solid team defensive player, and do my role for my teammates so we can get the stop. On the offensive end, when it comes to knocking down threes in big moments, I have to not overthink it. Once I start overthinking my shot, that's when I don't have as much success."

Michaela VanderKlugt scored 14 points for the Eagles and scrapped up seven boards, two of them offensive to give the Eagles second chance opportunities. Kennedy Fulcher added 12 points and eight boards leading the Eagles in rebounds. Fulcher has been a beast on the boards all season.

"I'm trying my best to block out my man," said Fulcher. "I have been lucky to be in the right place at the right time."

The Eagles now have three victories over top 25 ranked teams and are looking for some more wins next week as they face off back-to-back days with Biola. Starting Feb. 5, the Green and Gold host the other Eagles of the PacWest at 2:00 p.m. They then have a quick turn around to Feb. 6 and play at Biola at 2:00 p.m. For the full Eagle schedule CLICK HERE.
