Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Taylor Krouse

Nationally Ranked CUI Women's Basketball Wins the Battle of the Eagles

IRVINE, Calif. – Nationally ranked CUI women's basketball has won four games in a row with their defeat over Biola.

The Green and Gold held the lead the entire game although Biola put up a good fight with the ending score being 68-62. Michaela VanderKlugt led the way with 17 points and six rebounds. She also worked to get her teammates the ball and earned five assists. Sierra Clark led the team in assists with six as she maneuvered around the defense and read the floor well. Clark hit a key three pointer to help gain some momentum for CUI.

"I think we responded well to their run," said Clark. "We came together and went back to the little things like communicating on defense and finding the open player on offense."

Destiny Sambrano, a sophomore, stepped up and scored second highest for CUI with 12 points. She has a strong ability to get to the basket off the dribble as well as hit the trey ball.

"Destiny gave us a big lift the entire game," said Clark. "Her energy that she brings to the game is contagious and her being aggressive not only opens things up for her but for the whole team as well. We're lucky to have her!"

Kennedy Fulcher added nine points and five rebounds. Camryn Kiernan knocked down a couple shots from behind the arc and earned an and one giving her nine points. Savannah Felix-Amoroso also added eight points for CUI and snatched up four boards.

"I think we responded very well," said Sambrano. "We didn't panic with how the way Biola was playing but we just played the way we knew how to. We both went on runs and we did a great job sticking together until the game was over."

The PacWest battle of the Eagles continues Feb. 6 at Biola at 5:00 p.m. which is a last-minute time change! For the full CUI women's basketball schedule CLICK HERE!
