IRVINE, Calif. - The Eagles of Concordia University Irvine found themselves hosting Azusa Pacific in their first PacWest conference game of the season.
Throughout the first half of regulation, neither team could quite find an advantage, heading into the break scoreless. The Eagles found their spark when the second half began as
Miguel Pena beat his defender and lobbed a cross to the charging
Alex Perez, who was able to connect with it and head it easily in to the Cougars net. It didn't take CUI long to double their lead when Pena found himself in a pocket of space in the attacking third, winding up and lazering a shot in to the upper right corner.
The Eagles offense wasn't finished as
Jesse Cervantes was subbed on and immediately collected the ball from the visitors defense, beating the keeper and calming slotting it in the net to extend their lead three to nil. The Cougars pulled a goal back in the last few minutes of the match, but it wasn't enough to pull the score level. There was no lack of offensive power from either team, but it was the Eagles of Concordia that was able to make their chances count and seal the victory.
CUI is back in PacWest conference action as they travel to Hawaii next week to take on Chaminade University on October 14th at 3:30 p.m.
