LOS ANGELES, Calif. –
Jasmine Rachal hit a pair of clutch three-pointers down the stretch to help propel the Concordia University Irvine women's basketball team to a 69-66 come-from-behind victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in their season opener.
The Eagles trailed by as many as 14 points on multiple occasions but a strong surge in the second half allowed them to emerge with the narrow victory on a neutral court. Cal State Los Angeles hosted the game and will face CUI on Saturday afternoon.
Preseason All-Conference selection
Michaela VanderKlugt scored a team-high 18 points and collected 11 rebounds for a double-double.Â
Rachal added 12 points and finished a team-best +14 on the afternoon. Her trey just under the two-minute mark in the fourth quarter put CUI up 64-63. The Brea, Calif. native then hit another three-pointer with 15 seconds left to give CUI the lead for good 67-66.
Rosary Academy alum
Savannah Felix-Amoroso added 15 points and eight rebounds. Felix-Amoroso and VanderKlugt each hit a free throw in the final 30 seconds to help CUI fend off the Toros attempts to tie the game late.
Newcomer
Lauren Richter contributed 11 points and four boards off the bench and
Samantha Fries scored her first field goal as well as an Eagle.
True freshmen and former Clovis High School teammates
Justyce Harris and
Kendall Jackson also made their debuts for the Green and Gold. Harris scored her first field goal and first three-pointer as an Eagle to finish with five points. She also went an impressive +12 in the game. Jackson helped the cause with four rebounds and handed out four assists.
