IRVINE, Calif. -CUI soccer was back in action Saturday night, taking on the Hawks of Holy Names University, looking to win their second conference match at home in a row after beating Dominican two days prior.
The visitors seemed to control much of the possession in the first half, but it didn't take long for the green and gold to find a way back into the game. In the 12th minute,
Luke Ryan stole the ball and was able to square a pass to a cutting
Willy Ospina. The midfielder quickly found
Alex Perez, who fired a strike that pinged off the bottom of the upper left crossbar and rolled down the back of the net, putting CUI up 1-0.Â
After the halftime break, the teams created an eventful match, with neither team entirely putting any chances away. It wasn't until
Klaus Huovila used his throwing strength to float a throw-in into the box where a persistent Perez was there to collect the loose ball and double the Eagles lead.
Perez collected the sixth and seventh goals of his first full-time season with the program, as well as his second brace of the season. The Eagles outshot the visitors 14 to seven in total shots.
Andre Flores only had to save a single shot but collected his third clean sheet of the season after an impressive showing from his backline.
The Eagles are on the road for their final PacWest road match next Thursday in San Diego as they face the Sea Lions of PLNU on November 11th at 2:30 p.m.Â
Senior Day will be Saturday, Nov. 13 against Fresno Pacific.
