CUI Concludes Home Stand with Two More Sweeps

IRVINE, Calif. - The Concordia women's volleyball team played their last two matches in a doubleheader against Dominican Saturday. The Eagles closed out both matches during their nine game home stand and came out victorious for eight of them. Not only did CUI take home the wins but they swept all eight of their opponents advancing to 17-6 and 12-4 in PacWest conference. 

GAME 1 - CUI 3, DUC 0

Freshman Kennedy Farley led the Eagles in the first match with 14 kills with Kirra Schulz racking up eight of her own along with seven digs. Both middles had another notable match with Hannah Tostado adding five kills and Mackenzie Jensen finishing with seven kills. The middles hit above .330 and they put up five blocks each, including one solo from both. Tostado continues to be a force to recon with behind the service line and had two aces making her total to 19 on the season. Daniela Poles had five kills and three blocks with one solo.

Cassidy Gelacio dug up 14 digs and marks her third straight match concluding at 14 each. Julia Wilson had another stand out performance scooping up balls with 16 digs and two aces. Setter Brianna Latigue dished out another 33 assist game in just three sets.

Long service runs was a big factor for the game as many Eagles went on runs helped them extend their lead over the Penguins. CUI would not allow DUC to come back into the match in the first two sets after long runs from Tostado and Schulz. 

The Eagles continued the momentum in the beginning of the third set taking a dominant 6-0 lead. The Penguins slowly tip-toed their way back in the set taking their first lead over the Eagles at 11-14. Latigue went on a four point run and kills from Farley and Jensen helped take the lead back by two points. A kill from Schulz finished the match for the Eagles with final scores 25-20, 25-12, and 25-23.

GAME 2 - CUI 3, DUC 0

Schulz had another double-double night with 15 kills and 10 digs while adding two aces making to her total to 32 on the season thus far. Farley had eight kills and another three blocks which ties her career-high for the third time in blocks. Patience O'Neal had seven hard knocks and the one solo block for the Eagles during the match. Both middles Jalyssa Sanchez and Jensen had six kills a-piece with Danielle McCasland with two.

Latigue had 29 assists, 10 digs, and three kills that were over on two that caught the Penguins off guard. Julia Wilson was the libero for Green and Gold and had another 16 digs, making her total to 36 in one day and four assists. Gelacio came in as the defensive specialist in the back and had two aces and seven digs. 

Devin Sivertson came into the match for the Eagles and was all over with five assists, one ace, and three digs. In just one set, Tostado went two-for-three and had three blocks. 

The second set was a close one for CUI as they were tied 13 all until Gelacio went to the end line to go on a six point run with help from Jensen offensively to take their lead back and not let the Penguins get back into the match. The Eagles closed out the match with scores 25-12, 25-22, and 25-18.


The Eagles will be on the road next week and play against Academy of Art on Friday, Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. and Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 3 p.m.
