A Look Back At Second Annual Concordia Serves Day

By Ben Rosehart

IRVINE, Calif.  – Many hands make light work.

That was evident on Tuesday as hundreds of members of the Concordia University Irvine athletics department enjoyed partaking in the second annual Concordia Serves Day with the rest of the school.

Teams were spread out on campus to help with various special projects.  For example, the CUI track and field team helped clean and sandpaper the wooden walls of the brand-new baseball facility on one side of campus.  Softball players helped crochet gifts for babies and the elderly at a station set up in the amphitheater.  The baseball team got its hands dirty and joined a group that was helping spruce up the Heritage Garden.

Having the opportunity to impact the university and community for years to come is what life is all about. Concordia continues to grow to new heights in developing the minds and spirit of its students and staff. To be a part of that development is a blessing. It is definitely something we love and take a lot of pride in being a part of.

The spirit teams joined the water polo and swimming and diving teams in writing notecards for essential workers, the elderly, and members of the military. The basketball teams then helped pack those notecards as part of care packages.  Other teams helped beautify the campus, which included recycling projects.

The beach volleyball program also made phone calls to the elderly and the infirmed, looking to be a light for those who have had limited social interaction over the past year due to COVID-19 distancing.

The opportunity to able to serve with teammates today emphasized the culture that is being instilled within our program to be servant leaders. Being able to talk with the elderly was a great reminder to take the time to show others that you are thinking of them and appreciate them as well.

Concordia Serves Day is becoming a new tradition at CUI, and something the student-athletes and coaches really look forward to every spring.

Having the CUI women’s volleyball team help in Concordia Serves is always fun and serving is a great way to give back to our community when they have done so much for us. “I am very excited to see Concordia Serves become an annual tradition because I feel like it brings our teams closer together and all of us helping our community is a great way to give back to our school.
CUI women's volleyball player Patience O’Neal

"I believe it is a wonderful tradition that allows for us to take a day and focus our minds on truly appreciating the act of service and the impact it can have on others," added Wood.
