SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine baseball team opened the 2021 season today in San Diego with a doubleheader split against PacWest opponent, Point Loma Nazarene.
In Game 1 of the doubleheader, all nine players in the lineup collected at least one hit, with
Haloa Dudoit recording both a single and a double. In the top of the 3
rd,
Cooper Moore hit a 2-run bomb to left center, driving in
Jair Donovan and giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Derek Delgado later singled in the same inning, scoring freshman
Nathan Benefeito. The very next inning,
Matt Lautz hit a solo shot to right center field to put the Eagles ahead 4-0.
Senior pitcher
Brett Vansant turned in a quality start, going 6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, and 4 K.
Ryan Johnston would later take the mound in the 9
th inning to close the door, earning his first save and giving Vansant his first win of the season in the 4-2 victory.
Game 2 of the doubleheader was a pitching duel, with both teams remaining scoreless until Point Loma's walk-off home run in the bottom of the 7
th inning. Starting pitcher
Carpenter Pagett struck out 6 batters in 4 innings while the CUI offense recorded 3 hits in the 1-0 loss.
The Eagles host the Sea Lions tomorrow at Eagles Field in their 2021 home opener. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 1:00 PM. No fans are allowed in-person at this time.Â
