IRVINE, Calif. – The Eagles split their doubleheader with Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday, winning the first game by a score of 11-10 and dropping the second game by a score of 4-2.
The bats were hot in Game 1, as the Eagles scored 11 runs on 13 hits.
Haloa Dudoit,
Jair Donovan,
Xavier Gonzalez, and
Tony Garcia III each turned in multi-hit performances. After taking a 4-1 lead,
Matt Lautz hit a solo home run to right center in the 4
th inning to give the Eagles a 4-run lead.
In the 7
th inning, a clutch PLNU bases-clearing double gave the Sea Lions an 8-6 lead. But CUI wasn't done yet, as they responded with 5 runs of their own in the bottom of the 8
th with a 2-run double by
Cooper Moore and a 2-run single by Garcia III. The Sea Lions would make things interesting in the top of the 9
th by getting the tying run to second base, but
Ryan Johnston was able to shut the door and seal the victory for the Eagles with his second save of the season.
"Everyone on the team is pulling for each other. If one guy doesn't get the job done, we can count on the next guy to get it done. We just all have each other's backs. We're always fighting." – Senior outfielder Matt Lautz on the win in Game 1.
Similar to Friday's doubleheader in San Diego, Game 2 featured a pitching duel between both starters.
Cole Spear only surrendered 2 hits in 4 innings of work, while striking out 3 and giving up 1 earned run. CUI's two runs came on a
Cooper Moore sac fly in the 1
st, as well as a
Jair Donovan RBI single in the 3
rd. The Eagles bullpen was unable to stop the Sea Lions from plating 2 more runs in the 5
th and 6
th innings, ultimately resulting in a 4-2 loss.
"I thought both teams threw a ton of quality pitches and played good defense. All 4 games were extremely competitive and fun to be a part of." – Head Coach Joe Turgeon.
