CUI Takes Down No. 22 Santa Clara

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES, Calif. -  Saturday marked huge milestones for both the CUI women's water polo team and one of their upperclassmen in the pool.

Dailynn Santoro moved into first place in the CUI record books for career goals by helping cement a 11-9 win over No. 22 Santa Clara. It's the first win over a ranked team for the Eagles since moving into the NCAA DII era and also the first victory for Coach Dreason Barry and his squad against a Golden Coast Conference opponent.

Game One: CUI 11, No. 22 Santa Clara 9

Santoro scored twice against Santa Clara, including a clutch goal off a pass by Madison Ravelo late in the fourth quarter.  Her goal with just over one minute remaining was an important insurance goal after the Broncos had trimed CUi's lead to 10-9 just seconds earlier.

Santoro's second goal of the contest also moved her into first place on the all-time scoring list at CUI. She passed Lybov Tchougounova by collecting career goal No. 94.  Tchougounova tallied 93 goals in 2011. Santoro entered this season with 90 on record and had scored once in each of the previous two contests. She is also the school's all-time leader in career steals.

Janie Hobbs led the Green and Gold with three goals, while Farrah Martin joined Ravelo and Santoro with two apiece. Kim Reidel and Emily Tucker also found the back of the net once.

"It felt really awesome," admitted Santoro. "Being a really new team, having 11 new girls, it felt good to see us come together and play as a team. The fact that (Santa Clara) was ranked felt even more rewarding."

"It definitely felt good to play a competitive game and get a win," said Barry. "This group has a lot of potential for growth, learning our offensive and defensive system. We just need time together to develop."

Tatiana Cava made three critical saves in the final four minutes of the game to help preserve the victory.

Game Two: No. 19 LMU 11, CUI 6

Riding the wave after that big win earlier in the day, the Eagles were locked in another battle against a ranked squad just a few hours later.

Reidel and Tucker led the CUI offense this time as they each scored three times. However, no other teammates could find the back of the net and LMU was able to post the victory.
