Nemeth & Hughes Lead CUI Offense At Biola

Nemeth Ties Sprinkle For Team Lead in Homers

LA MIRADA, Calif.- The No. 8 Concordia University Irvine softball team traveled to Biola for the second time this season to battle Biola. Both sets of Eagles entered with winning records and 11 wins prior to the doubleheader.

However, CUI fell short in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader, putting up a fight late in both contests against BU.

Game 1: CUI 1, BU 6

Callie Nunes started game one in the doubleheader. Nunes recently broke Concordia's school record for most career strikeouts and began the day with 672 total strikeouts to her name.

Nunes did a great job shutting out Biola for the first four innings. In the fifth, Biola had a breakthrough inning placing six runs on the board. Kelsea Sweeney came in to close for the Green and Gold holding BU to those six runs for the rest of the game.

In the top of the seventh, the CUI Eagles scratched their way on the scoreboard with a solo home run by sophomore Missy Nemeth. Nemeth has been a powerhouse this season with a total of four home runs, 13 hits, and 15 RBI.

However, that rounded out all the scoring in this one, and Biola hung on for a 6-1 win.

Game 2: CUI 4, BU 6

Sophomore Rae Flores got the start in the next game. Flores personally owned five wins already this season, and was looking to help her team secure a split in the second part of the doubleheader. Flores was also named PacWest Pitcher of the Week for her last performance against Biola that resulted in a 6-0 win for the CUI Eagles.

Biola stayed hot in the first inning scoring a run early on, but Concordia answered back immediately in the second. Nemeth started the inning off by working a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Julianna Covarrubias. Rylie Rohr hit a single to the left side to score Covarrubias and then Myka Hughes came up and sneaked in a double to right center that scored two runs. The CUI Eagles ended the inning up 3-1.

In the bottom of the second, Concordia made a pitching change replacing Flores for Sweeney who was effective against the Red and Black in the previous game. The inning ended with CUI up 3-2.

The Concordia Eagles had an exciting fourth inning looking to add some insurance. The inning began with a pair of singles by Erika Morris and Lauren Lopez, but was defused by Biola's defense.

BU ran with the momentum and put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth, placing them ahead of CUI 5-2. In the sixth Biola got another run across, upping the score 6-3.

Concordia fought back in the seventh as McKinsey Thorpe smacked a RBI single that scored Megan Massa.  But the visiting Eagles were unable to close the gap any further and Biola escaped with a 6-4 victory.

CUI will face off against BU again this Saturday, April 4 at home for another doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
