POMONA, Calif. –
Kirra Schulz placed five aces in Concordia University Irvine's first victory of the season on Thursday against Western Oregon.
She did it again on Friday against Western New Mexico.
Even better, the Eagles emerged victorious for the second straight day over at the Broncos Classic hosted by Cal Poly Pomona.
Less than 24 hours after beating Western Oregon in five sets, CUI pulled off a sweep of Western New Mexico by a count of 25-12, 27-25, 25-23.
Schulz earned four straight aces to open the match, catapulting CUI in front immediately and forcing an early timeout from the Mustangs. The Eagles built a 7-0 advantage before Western New Mexico got on the board and cruised in the first set easily.
The next two sets were a different story.
CUI trailed 24-20 in the second set before turning the tide. Another ace by Schulz gave the Eagles a boost and helped them come back to extend the stanza. Fittingly, an ace by
Cassidy Gelacio locked up the improbable win 27-25 as CUI finished that second set on a 7-1 tear.
The third match was also very tight and both teams played better defensively.
Jalyssa Sanchez and
Daniela Poles each had a hand in multiple blocks, and
Kennedy Farley led CUI in that third set with three kills. CUI ultimately prevailed 25-23 to close out the 3-0 victory.
Recently named PacWest Preseason Setter of the Year Brianna Latigue handed out a game-high 19 assists.Â
Julia Wilson racked up nine digs in three sets to lead CUI in that category.
The Eagles will take the court for two more matches on Saturday, Sept. 4. Â CUI faces Cal State Dominguez Hills at 1:00 P.M. before tangling with the host Broncos at 5:30 P.M.
