Irvine, Calif. - The Concordia University Irvine women's soccer team opened up their regular season at home against Cal State Los Angeles. The Green and Gold struggled to establish much of an offensive rhythm as they withheld a steady barrage of chances from the visiting Golden Eagles.
The first half proved to be an offensive struggle for both teams, with neither posing much of a threat to the opposing goal, ending scoreless at the conclusion of the first forty-five minutes. However, CUI did not need much time at the beginning of the second half to give themselves the early advantage. Senior forward
Carmany Jones was able to put
Jadenn Carrillo through to goal in the 46th minute to tally her first on the regular season.
CUI's defense was solid throughout the rest of the half, holding the visitors back from drawing things level. Unfortunately, in the 81st minute, CSULA's efforts proved fruitful as one of their eleven shots of the half successfully found its way in the goal, tying up the game and forcing it into extra time.
Neither team could finish the game off before 20 minutes had passed, and the final whistle blew of extra time, resulting in a 1-1 tie.
Despite the game's result, senior goalkeeper
Hailey Asato had an outstanding showing in the net, facing 17 shots while collecting eight crucial saves for the Eagles.
CUI women's soccer continues the season at home against the Yotes of Cal State San Bernardino this Wednesday, Sept. 9th, at 3 P.M., looking to earn their first win in front of their home crowd.
