IRVINE, Calif. – Wednesday night's home opener for the Concordia University Irvine men's soccer team definitely was a high-energy affair with Cal State San Bernardino in town.
The Eagles were eager to showcase their skills in front of a boisterous home crowd
after beating Cal Poly Pomona on the road last Thursday, 3-2. Â At the same time, the Coyotes were making their regular season debut and were jacked up for their first game in nearly two years.
CUI freshman goalkeeper
Andre Flores came up with nine huge saves to turn in a clean sheet with the help of his teammates. The nine stops were also a career-high for Flores, who is off to a solid start for the Green and Gold.
A couple scoring chances for the visitors also involved Lady Luck. A penalty kick sailed high over the bar as the Eagles avoided falling behind in the first half after a whistle in the box.
Later in the second half, a strong shot by one of the 'Yotes glanced off the top of the bar and bounced back into play and CUI was able to dodge another potential deficit.
Elijah Amadin,
Alex Perez and
Miguel Pena were each able to put a shot on goal during the contest. That trio combined for eight total shots but none could find the back of the net.
Willy Ospina attempted four shots as well but this game was destined to be a 0-0 draw as both teams refused to concede a goal.
The Eagles (1-0-1) return to action over at Cal State Dominguez Hills this Saturday, Sept. 11 at 7:00 P.M. It will be the second match in a doubleheader featuring the women's teams at the same location over in Carson. The women play at 4:30 P.M.
