Eagles Prosper In PacWest Showdown With Vulcans

VanderKlugt Excels After Winning Record 13th Conference Weekly Award

IRVINE, Calif. – The Eagles received two sensational scoring outings from Michaela VanderKlugt and Jasmine Rachal on Monday night and fed off that energy to defeat the University of Hawaii Hilo 68-51.

The Eagles (9-6, 6-3 PacWest) only had five players score in this one but with that dazzling duo scorching the nets, the entire team concentrated on defense and was able to complete a season sweep of the Vulcans (7-4, 4-3 PacWest).

Hours after being tabbed as the new PacWest Player of the Week, VanderKlugt poured in 29 points to help CUI take advantage of their matchup inside. The Carondelet High School alum shot a magnificent 13-for-17 from the floor against the Vulcans and added seven rebounds and four steals.

Rachal led all scorers at halftime with 19 points after the opening period.  She finished with 23 points and was an efficient 9-for-14 from the field with three triples. She has now scored in double figures in 13 of CUI's 15 games this season.

"Jazz is super shifty with the ball and their guards had trouble guarding her," said Katie Timmerman, who filled up the stat sheet with five points, six rebounds, a block and three assists. "Michaela is very skilled in the post and their bigs were having trouble too so they both made my life easier and everyone's job pretty easy."

VanderKlugt has been on a scoring and rebounding tear this season. She was coming off a week where she broke the PacWest Conference all-time record for career rebounds. VanderKlugt has also won a weekly conference award a whopping 13 times – which no other women's basketball player has ever done in PacWest history (Player of the Week on eight occasions, Defender of the Week once and Freshman of the Week three times).

Rachal just hit a major milestone herself last week. The Brea, Calif. native scored career point No. 1,000 in the home win over Point Loma last Thursday, joining VanderKlugt as the only two women's players at CUI to hit the century mark in the program's NCAA DII era.

CUI is back on the court this Thursday, Jan. 27 with Chaminade in town before welcoming Hawaii Pacific to CU Arena on Saturday. Both games are slated to begin at 5 p.m.
