CUI Opens Season Against Two Ranked Teams

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The CUI women's water polo team started the 2022 season in Riverside at the Lancer Joust Saturday. The Eagles competed in a double header against two topped ranked teams with No. 16 UC Santa Barbara and No. 23 Cal State Northridge.
 
GAME 1: CUI 10, UCSB 17
Senior Madison Ravelo started the game off for the Eagles with the first goal of the season. Tamsyn Evezard threw the ball in the back of the goal with just over one minute left while Nicole Tormey was able to score at the end of the first trailing by just one point. Kim Reidel and Ravelo were able to secure two more goals for the Green and Gold before the half by a score 5-9.
 
Ravelo and Evezard led the third for the CUI as they secured two and one goal each while holding UCSB to three goals as well. In the fourth, Ravelo scored on a penalty shot while Josie Miller added a tally to the score on a power play with only 30 seconds remaining.
 
Ravelo scored on five of the six shots she took while Evezard scored two on her five attempts in the water. Tatiana Cava played for the full game between the posts and totaled eight saves with one steal.
 
GAME 2: CUI 10, CSUN 11
The second game was a close match-up against No. 23 Cal State Northridge as the Matadors earned the win by just one goal difference in the fourth.
 
Freshman Natalia Stanard scored her first goal of the season and was the solo goal for CUI in the first. Four different Eagles scored in the second quarter which brought the game to a tie at 5 a-piece at the half.
 
Nicole Tormey and Emily Tucker threw two balls each between the posts in the third. CSUN scored another four in the third as well to keep the score tied after the quarter and going into the fourth. Ravelo scores a goal for the Eagles early in the fourth to take the lead over the Matadors by one. CSUN scored two goals in the fourth to secure the game by a close score 10-11.

Tatiana Cava started the second game for the Green and Gold and put up 13 saves during the game.
 
The Eagles will continue their road games next week in La Mirada, Calif. playing against Biola at 1 p.m. and back in the pool Saturday, Feb. 5 at UC Irvine at 3 p.m.
