OAKLAND, Calif. - The Concordia Eagles were excited to take the court Saturday and start their scheduled three-game road trip in the Bay Area against the Academy of Art Urban Knights.
It just didn't go the way they had planned.
Playing short-handed in their rematch with the Knights, Concordia fell behind 10-2 early while ART U was able to utilize its depth effectively. Academy of Art used 11 different players that scored and opened up a 36-18 lead by halftime to grab control of the contest.
Wayne Arnold scored a game-high 29 points and
Kobe Sanders added 19 for Concordia, but the Urban Knights never relinquished the lead and clinched a sweep of the season series with an 85-71 victory.
Arnold hit back-to-back three-pointers to open the second half. Sanders followed with a trey of his own from the top of the arc as CUI pieced together a 9-0 run to slice the halftime deficit in half. But the Knights responded quickly with an 8-0 run of their own to put some space between them and the visitors which proved to be too tough of a task to overcome.
Arnold moved back into the top five in NCAA DII in scoring average as he is now averaging 24.3 points per game through 13 contests. The Compton Dominguez High School alum knocked down 10 free throws and he and Sanders also each hit three triples.
Starters
Kayle Knuckles and
Rodrick McCobb combined for 11 rebounds and Knuckles also handed out three assists. Cam Fini chipped in with eight points and four boards in his return to Tobin Gymnasium. The game was played on the home court of Holy Names University due to a recent schedule change for Academy of Art.
Meanwhile, freshmen
Cristian Butler,
Connor Gleason and
Matthew Brookins combined for nine points and nine rebounds off the bench. Gleason finished +5 on the day.
SCHEDULE UPDATE: The Eagles were originally preparing to play at Dominican on Sunday and then at Holy Names on Tuesday, Jan. 11 back at Tobin Gymnasium. Unfortunately, due to a lack of players available due to a combination of COVID-19 health and safety protocols and injuries, Sunday's game has been postponed and the road trip has been cut short after Saturday's completed game against ART U.
