CUI Denies the Vulcans

IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's volleyball team earned their second consecutive sweep over Hawaii Hilo Saturday with scores 25-8, 25-23, and 27-25. As a team, the Golden Eagles had 24 blocks and three solo marking 15 total blocks and a season high for CUI. The Golden Eagles are third in the PacWest averaging 2.14 blocks per set.

The Vulcans started the match off earning two points until Julia Wilson went on an 11 point run to take an 11-2 lead and dominated the first set holding UHH to only eight points. The following two sets were a tough one for the Golden Eagles as the Vulcans were scrappy all over the court keeping rallies going. UHH jumped out in the third set to take an early 14-7 lead over CUI. Just as the Vulcans were up 21-14, Cassie Prior went to the back line and went on a seven point run to take a one point lead over UHH and shift the momentum. Kirra Schulz slammed a kill down along with a block next to Halli Hooks to secure the last two points and match for CUI.

Senior Kirra Schulz led the Golden Eagles with a double-double finishing with 14 kills and 15 digs. Ola Magiera and Kennedy Farley had eight kills a-piece. Farley dug up nine hard hits from the Vulcans while Cassie Prior had six kills, block assists, and digs.

Middles Jalyssa Sanchez and Halli Hooks had a dominate performance up at the net defensively. Sanchez had five kills with one solo block and five block assists. Hooks ties her career-high of nine blocks including two being solo blocks.

Libero Julia Wilson was all over the court the whole match digging up 15 and put up some show stopper digs to allow the Golden Eagles offense to finish the job.

The Golden Eagles will be on the road as they play against Fresno Pacific in Fresno, Calif. on Saturday, Oct. 8 with a 2 p.m. start time. Looking ahead CUI will be back in the CU Arena on Saturday, Oct. 15 against Academy of Art at 5 p.m.
