Golden Eagles Go The Distance Against the Vulcans

HILO, Hawaii – The Concordia University Irvine women's volleyball team started their three game stint in Hawaii on Wednesday night against Hawaii Hilo. The match was a battle between the two teams as the Golden Eagles were able to secure the win in five with scores 25-19, 20-25, 19-25, 25-17, and 21-19.

Kirra Schulz had an outstanding performance as she finished with 24 kills on 62 attempts with only one hitting error. Schulz was also all over the court from the back row picking up 27 digs throughout the match. Freshman Ally Scheidle came into the game and made an immediate impact with nine kills and eight digs. Gabrielle Barcelos put up eight kills, five digs, and three blocks which included one solo.

Cassie Prior and Jalyssa Sanchez both threw down six kills while Sanchez had three blocks and Prior was tough at the service line with two aces. Middle blocker Halli Hooks continues to impress at the net as she recorded three block assists and one solo to add along with five kills.

Michelle Feliciano dished out 31 assists and 16 digs along with Devin Sivertson adding 21 assists and nine digs. Julia Wilson and Cassidy Gelacio both shared the libero duties and picked up seven and 12 digs.

The first set was a close match up until the Golden Eagles stretched out a seven point run that led the Vulcans to take both timeouts in that span. UHH slowly made their way on top in the second and forced the Green and Gold to take both timeouts when trailing by four points each time. The Vulcans kept their momentum in third set and went on a couple runs that did not allow the Golden Eagles to get back in the set.

CUI fought for the next two sets as they jumped out with an early lead in the fourth and tough serving from libero Gelacio extending their lead by six points. A couple hitting errors by UHH and back-to-back kills from Scheidle and Sanchez secured the fourth set to CUI while forcing a fifth deciding set. The score toggled in the fifth and hitting errors by the Vulcans kept the Golden Eagles in the game while going the distance. Two consecutive kills from Scheidle and one from Schulz finished the match with a close score in the fifth 21-19.

The Golden Eagles will play back-to-back nights against Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific starting Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22 with slated times 10 p.m. PST and 6 p.m. PST.
