CUI & Air Force Get Defensive

Both Goalies Impress & McElwee Scores Twice

IRVINE, Calif. - Connor McElwee scored twice and handed out an assist and Hunter Osgood collected a game-high nine saves to help Concordia University Irvine challenge the Air Force Academy in a rare Saturday night game for both squads.

Senior Jeff Runyan inched closer to breaking the school record for career goals by scoring once in the first half. Runyan now has scored 50 times this season to lead his team.

Runyan finished the weekend with 130 career goals at Concordia and moved into sole possession of second place on the all-time list. He needs one more to match and two goals to break the current record held by Patrik Zsiros (131 career goals).  His next chance to do so is this coming Wednesday at home against Biola.

CUI limited Air Force standout Grant Snyder to just two goals but could not crack the code of the Air Force defense.  With the exception of an early outburst by the Falcons in the opening stanza, neither team scored more than two goals in any other period. The Falcons built a 5-1 adantage after the first period and fended off CUI the rest of the way.

CUI got outstanding play from its defense. Air Force goalie AJ Kuypers was also superb and matched Osgood with five saves that came at important junctures in the game.

Austin Wade and freshman Harry Bentham also each scored a goal for the Golden Eagles.

The game was played at Beckman High School a few minutes from CUI's campus.

This coming Wednesday, Oct. 26 will feature a rare doubleheader for Concordia as the Golden Eagles host Biola at 1:30 p.m. at Woollett Aquatics Center and then return to Beckman for another night game against Ottawa.  The 7 p.m. game against Ottawa will also be Senior Night for the Golden Eagles.
