Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 IRVINE, Calif. – Wednesday will be remembered as a great day – and night – for the Concordia men's water polo team for multiple reasons.
The entire Concordia senior class was rewarded with not one, but two home victories in front of family and friends over Biola and Ottawa University of Arizona (OUAZ).
On top of that, leading scorer
Jeff Runyan broke the school record for career goals in the afternoon win over Biola.
CUI 10, OUAZ 8
Runyan tied the record previously held by Patrik Zsiros with career goal No. 131 in the second period. The Modesto, Calif. native then scored again in the second half off a sweet pass by sophomore
Jacob Stuart to take sole possession of the recognized record. It is the most goals scored by a Concordia men's water polo player in the NCAA DII era and dating back to the 2015 season.
In fitting fashion, the Golden Eagles won by exactly two goals to earn their second conference win of the season and improve to 2-4 in the WWPA.
Harry Bentham and
Austin Wade each added two goals apiece.
Goalie
Hunter Osgood made many outstanding saves and finished with nine stops. CUI freshman
Leo Erickson added a game-high three assists. Runyan also had two helpers and Stuart and
Callin Chimilar each supplied one goal and one assist.
Concordia moved to 5-0 all-time against Biola since the rival school from nearby La Mirada started the men's water polo program in 2021.
CUI 11, OUAZ 9
The six CUI seniors were honored before the evening game against Ottawa and they were all smiles before and after the match.
Runyan continued his winning ways by adding five more goals to his career tally. The Gregori High School alum also added two assists.
Austin Wade made two passes that led to goals, bringing his career total to 50 recorded assists. That is one shy of the recognized career assists record at Concordia, held by Nick Walker with 51. Wade is currently tied for second on the all-time list with Zsiros.
Goalie
Tanner Powell got the nod in the nightcap for the Golden Eagles and was superb between the pipes. Powell racked up a season-high 12 saves and had multiple denials at point-blank range.
Chimilar also scored twice,
Connor McElwee cashed in on a five-meter penalty shot, and the freshman trio of Bentham, Erickson and
Sam Diamond each chipped in with a goal.
Concordia visits Santa Clara this Saturday for its next WWPA contest before returning to Woollett Aquatics Center for one more local game on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 1:30 p.m. against CBU.
