CUI Breaks Down HPU Defense

Munoz & Filipovic Help Golden Eagles Shutout Sharks

IRVINE, Calif. – Competing in the first of three home conference games this week, the Concordia University Irvine women's soccer team bolstered its resume for the regional rankings with a 2-0 home victory over Hawaii Pacific.

Sophia Munoz wowed the crowd in the first half, breaking down multiple defenders with some fancy footwork to net the first goal of the day.  Her unassisted goal was the only score of the first 45 minutes.

With under 20 minutes to play, HPU had its best scoring chance of the afternoon.  A brief opening for the Sharks saw a shot carom off the cross bar but fortunately for CUI the Sharks could not get the ball across the line for the equalizer.  Freshman goalkeeper Riley Urquiza ultimately finished with three saves and her fourth clean sheet of the regular season.

The back line also defended superbly in front of Urquiza as Gabby Breton, Brianna Guerra and Janessa Barton were among the Golden Eagles that provided good passing and closed their ground quickly when the Sharks tried to build their attack. Freshman Madison Hall earned her first career start with the Golden Eagles and also provided inspiring play in the midfield.

Concordia extended its lead later in the 84th minute when Daniela Filipovic unleashed a shot from deep while falling off-balance to the turf.  Her clutch shot caught HPU off guard and gave the Golden Eagles some extra breathing room and the Sharks could not recover.

Next on the docket, CUI hosts nationally-ranked Hawaii Hilo on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 3:30 p.m. The first-place Vulcans are coming off a 2-2 draw with Point Loma but are unbeaten in conference play. CUI gained two points on Hawaii Hilo on Monday and will look to make up more ground near the top of the standings on Thursday as well.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink as part of a special promotion on Thursday for both soccer matches in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The first 25 students at each game (50 total) will receive a voucher for a free burger at The Habit. The men will play the Vulcans at 6:30 p.m. in the nightcap after the women's match.
