IRVINE, Calif. - On Thursday evening, the Concordia University Irvine men's soccer team faced off against the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans in a PacWest matchup where CUI looked to keep their playoff aspirations alive. The Golden Eagles also look to close the gap with Dominican in the conference table.
In the first half, the Golden Eagles brought the fight to the Vulcans' backline getting multiple shots on goal. Then in the 36th minute, Anthony Morales was able to streak past one of Hilo's center backs and deliver a cross to Brett Lux who gave CUI a 1-0 lead off a header. Concordia's defense denied the Vulcans a chance to equalize as they went into the half only allowing five shots
As the second half got underway, the Golden Eagles needed someone to make a play to put the game out of reach. In the 76th minute, freshman Kevin Sanchez answered the call and gave CUI a 2-0 lead off a stellar goal with three defenders closing in on him. With the game slipping away, the Vulcans looked to mount a comeback, but Andre Flores' five saves said otherwise. When the referee blew the final whistle, CUI walked away with a clean sheet and rose to third in the PacWest standings.
The Golden Eagles will honor their seniors tomorrow  Saturday, Oct. 29th, as they face off against Chaminade in what will be a crucial game for CUI.
