TUCSON, Ariz. – The CUI offense came roaring alive on Friday at the Desert Stinger Tournament.
PacWest Player of the Week
Missy Nemeth hit a home run in both games and
Cortney Koelmans and
Erika Morris each earned another win on the mound. That trio combined with their teammates to outscore their opposition 23-8 on Friday and help No. 10 Concordia improve to 9-0 on the young season.
Game 1: CUI 9, MSU Denver 2
Freshman
Kayla Simpson opened the scoring with a RBI single in the fourth inning. After the Roadrunners tied the game shortly afterward, CUI exploded for four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
A double by
Megan Massa scored
Michalah Robison to make it 2-1 CUI. Three more unearned runs would come home in that fifth inning to put CUI up 5-1. One of those came courtesy a RBI single by
Sydney Sprinkle.
Then in the sixth,
Missy Nemeth put the game out of reach by crushing a grand slam.
Koelmans maneuvered through five innings and only allowed four hits and one earned run.
Katlin Entrup entered after that and closed out the last two frames.
Game 2: CUI 14, Saint Martin's 6
The Eagles fell behind 2-0 and 4-1 in their second game of the day but kept competing and ultimately turned things around against Saint Martin's.
Nine different Eagles contributed at least one hit against the Saints.
CUI scored a whopping eight runs in the top of the third to move in front. Sprinkle was again doing damage in the heart of the lineup and smacked a two-run double to tie the game at four. Minutes later, Nemeth socked a two-run shot to put CUI ahead to stay, 6-4.
Sprinkle is now batting .500 on the season and Nemeth already has 11 RBI with a .478 batting average in nine starts at first base.
Four straight singles after Nemeth's long ball pushed the lead to 8-4.
Danielle Michaels delivered a two-run base hit and then a couple batters later,
Megan Massa added another RBI single to make it 9-4 CUI.
Rylie Rohr added a RBI single that scored
Jasmine Gorman in the fourth.
Lauren Lopez (RBI double) and
Kendall Flatt (RBI triple) kept the train going with extra base hits of their own to further extend the lead.
It all added up to a 14-6 victory and the most runs CUI has scored in their first nine games this season.
While the offense handled their business, the pitching tandem of
Rae Flores,
Erika Morris, and
Madison Urrutia did their job collectively to steer the Eagles to their latest victory over a non-conference opponent.
"We didn't play great today, but we absolutely crushed the ball," said CUI softball head coach
Crystal Rosenthal. "Missy hit two big home runs and Rylie and Sprinkle were great for us in game two. We will need to continue to fire on all cylinders if we want to be able to accomplish our goals, but we will take two wins any way we can get them."
CUI returns to action with two more tournament games on Saturday starting with a 12 p.m. clash with Regis.
