Schonebaum Leads Eagles to Victory in Series Finale

CARSON, Calif. – The CUI baseball team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday afternoon, salvaging the series to walk away with a split. With the win, the Eagles improve to 6-2-1 on the season and are one of six teams in the west region with a win percentage above .720.

Preseason All-PacWest pitcher Evan Larsen took the mound for the Eagles in the series finale. The graduate student threw 5.2 innings, allowing four earned runs and nine hits with seven strikeouts. After running into some trouble in the sixth inning, Larsen was relieved by Colton Bulger, who came in and immediately recorded the final out of the inning to escape the jam.

Noah McBride took the ball in the seventh, throwing a hitless three frames to finish out the game. The third-year southpaw struck out six batters while allowing no hits and no runs to earn his second win of the season. McBride now holds a 1.80 ERA on the season with 10 strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

The Eagle bats were slow to start against CSUDH's starting pitcher, not recording a hit until the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, CUI was able to tie the game at 2-2 on a Kevin Fowler RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Alex Moreno. The Toros responded quickly, regaining a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run.

With the score 4-2 in the top of the eighth inning, the Eagles were able to pull off an impressive comeback. With one out in the inning, Michael Dixon struck out swinging, but was able to reach first base on a dropped third strike. During the next at-bat, he advanced all the way to third base on two wild pitches. One batter later, Jackson Collins doubled down the right field line for his seventh extra base hit of the season to score Dixon and make the score 4-3.

With two outs in the inning and the tying run in scoring position, Calvin Schonebaum stepped up to the plate. On the fourth pitch of the at-bat, he destroyed a pitch to right field for a no-doubt home run. That home run was his second of the series and immediately shifted the momentum in favor of the Green & Gold. CUI would hang on to the 5-4 lead and secure the win.

Eagles return home for a game this Tuesday, Feb. 15th, at 5:00 PM against Cal State San Marcos (1-2). With no games scheduled for the upcoming weekend, CUI will head up north to face Academy of Art in the PacWest opener on Saturday, Feb. 26th.
