IRVINE, Calif. – The CUI men's volleyball team traveled down the street to play against UC Irvine on Friday. The Anteaters snapped the Eagles five game win streak in three sets with close scores 22-25, 22-25, and 25-27.
The match was a thriller as all three sets could have gone either way. Both teams played hard throughout the whole match and the Eagles were able to take their biggest lead of four points in two of the sets. The score was tied 30 times and only had five lead changes throughout the whole match.
Uriel Batista led the Eagles and earned a career-high of 17 kills with a hitting percentage above a .320 along with six digs. Batista had four blocks and a stand-out performance that helped the Eagles stop the Anteaters from going on long runs.
Outside hitters
Jonathan Carlson and
Erik Boisvert both had six kills and totaled 15 digs combined. Carlson dug up nine and was the only Eagle to serve up two aces for the match.
Gil Herold and
Mason Mullins put down four and three kills, respectively. Defensively Herold had four blocks while Mullins had three with one solo.
Makai Lipson marked his four game with over 30 assists and scooped up five digs. Libero
Danny Smithers played all match and recorded eight digs and two assists.
The Eagles will be on the road and play against UC San Diego Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. and will be back on their home court Monday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.
