SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The CUI women's basketball team defeated Point Loma Nazarene by a score of 72-65 on Saturday night, improving to 16-8 on the season and 13-5 in PacWest play. This is the first time in Head Coach
Christine Collins-Kiernan's five-year tenure that the Eagles have swept the Sea Lions on the season, having previously defeated them
earlier this year on Jan. 20 at CU Arena.
Jasmine Rachal and
Michaela VanderKlugt led the charge for the Green & Gold, scoring 22 and 21 points respectively. The dynamic duo account for over 51 percent of CUI's total points scored this season. Saturday night was VanderKlugt's tenth 20-point game of the 2021-22 campaign and Rachal's eighth, both being their individual career highs for a single season. VanderKlugt also finished the game with nine rebounds to add on to her PacWest and CUI all-time record, while Rachal collected six assists and four steals.
Freshmen
Kendall Jackson (9 points) and
Malia Smith (6 points) displayed their range against the Sea Lions, shooting a combined five-for-five from three-point range. The team as a whole shot 50 percent (8 for 16) beyond the arc to help maintain the lead nearly the entire game.
CUI also tied a season-high 12 steals in the game, matching their total against Northwest Nazarene on Nov. 27.
With the win, Concordia is now tied with Dominican for second place in the PacWest standings. CUI looks to claim sole ownership of that spot in their final two games of the regular season against Holy Names (Thursday, Feb. 24 at 5:00 PM) and Azusa Pacific (Saturday, Feb. 26 at 5:00 PM), both being home games at CU Arena.
