Williams and Perrin Shut Out Cougars in First Road Game of the Season

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The CUI baseball team won Tuesday afternoon's matchup at Cal State San Marcos, shutting out the Cougar offense in the 7-0 win. With the win, Concordia improves to 4-0-1 on the season and remains one of four teams in the NCAA West Region without a loss.

Matthew Williams took the mound for the Eagles, making the first start of his career. The southpaw gave up no runs and only three hits in 5.0 innings pitched, improving his ERA to 1.08 on the season. Williams earned the win, the second of his career.

Tristan Perrin relieved Williams in the sixth inning, throwing the remaining 4.0 innings to earn his first career save as an Eagle. In 9.0 innings this season, Perrin has struck out seven batters, allowing only five hits for an opponent batting average of .167 and an ERA of 1.00.

"The approach that's been working for me has been attacking the outside of the zone with fastballs and trusting that when the ball is put in play, my team is going to have my back and put hitters away," said Tristan Perrin. "With the kind of guys that we put out on the field, it makes it far less challenging to find different ways to get outs and have success on the mound."

In addition to dominant pitching, the offense collected some key hits to create separation in the game. Jackson Collins drove in the first run of the game in the top of the third inning on a single up the middle, allowing Michael Dixon to score from third to take a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles cashed in once again in the fourth inning on a Tristan Hanoian double down the right field line to score Alex Moreno from second base to make the score 2-0.

The big separator came in the top of the fifth inning when Collins drove in Nathan Benefeito on a triple to center field for Collins' fourth extra base hit of the season. Two batters later, Richard Castro launched a two-run home run to left field, that being his second home run of the season.

CSUSM handed CUI their final two runs of the game on a passed ball and a balk in the top of the ninth inning, both unearned.

Concordia looks ahead to their weekend series against 1-1 Cal State Dominguez Hills. CUI will play in Carson, Calif. on Friday, Feb. 11, and Sunday, Feb. 13, at 1:00 PM. The Green & Gold will host the Toros in a doubleheader at home on Saturday, Feb. 12, with the first game beginning at 1:00 PM.
