CUI Lacrosse Teams End February With A Bang

No. 7 CUI Men Stuns No. 2 Cal; Women Earn First Win

IRVINE, Calif. - It has been a whirlwind of a week for the two CUI lacrosse teams but together the squads combined for three thrilling wins in impressive ways.

CUI Men's Lacrosse 10, Cal 9

The CUI men's lacrosse team net a statement victory this past Saturday in a battle of nationally-ranked programs.  No. 7 CUI defeated No. 2 UC-Berkeley by one goal up in bear country in a crazy finish. Cade Poe earned MCLA Player of the Week Honorable Mention after netting the game-winning goal and also winning 90 percent of faceoffs (19 of 21!).

Troy Hofer scored three goals and handed out two assists. Be sure to check out this video of his dazzling over-the-shoulder goal that gave CUI a huge boost.

Tyler Schweickert made 22 saves and was also named MCAL Goalie of the Week for his superb performance.

CUI Men's Lacrosse 16, Sonoma State 5

The Eagles finished their road trip to Northern California with a resounding victory over Sonoma State on Monday.  After holding a slight 4-2 advantage at the end of the first period, the CUI offense woke up and built a double-digit lead to help the Eagles cruise from there.

James Chadwick scored four goals with two assists. Easton Babb helped the cause with three goals and a dime as well. Daniel Yang did his thing and came up with 13 saves in three quarters of work.

The CUI men are now 4-0 on the year after defeating UCLA and Cal Poly earlier in February.

CUI Women's Lacrosse 10, Cal State Fullerton 2

The CUI women's lacrosse team secured its first victory of the 2022 campaign with a dominating 10-2 decision over Cal State Fullerton.

Freshman goalie Mars Derrick collected 15 saves and the CUI offense put together a very balanced effort.

Celine Rios led the Green and Gold with three goals and Genevieve Maczko scored twice.

Samantha Gomez, Melinda Ibanez, Mallory Peters, Nanami Tsukamoto and Trinity Stiles-Parden also helped the cause by netting one goal apiece.
