Box Score COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball team headed down the freeway to play against Vanguard Tuesday night. The Eagles were able to overcome the Lions with scores 25-19, 27-29, 25-22, 25-20.
The middles were unstoppable during the match with
Gil Herold earning 13 kills while hitting a .667 hitting percentage and racking up two blocks.
Mason Mullins stood tall with five blocks at the net that came at clutch moments for the Eagles and had eight kills.
Senior
Owen Chun led the Green and Gold with 18 kills and two blocks. Other opposite hitter
Uriel Batista went four-for-six and had no errors throughout the match earning a hitting percentage of .667.
Jonathan Carlson scooped up the most digs and aces for the Eagles with seven and three. Carlson added another 11 kills and four blocks including one solo.
Setter
McLain Mott dished out a season-high of 41 assists in just four sets and came up big-time for a solo block up at the net that went untouched. Freshman
Slater Fuhrman came into the game and served up an ace and dug up two balls for the Eagles.
The third set was no different than before with the score continuing to toggle between the two teams. CUI earned two points to take a 23-21 lead over the Lions and force a timeout. The Eagles were able to close out the set with a close score 25-22.
Carlson with a solo block and a block from Chun and Mullins to extend their lead by four in the fourth.
Will Migdal comes out of the timeout and serves a ball that passes by two Lions players for an ace. The Eagles were able to overcome the Lions and take the set and match with a score 25-20.
The Green and Gold move to 6-4 on the season and will start a four game stanza in the CU Arena with three of them being three nights in a row. Eagles will first look to play two against Stanford on Thursday, Mar. 3 and Friday, Mar. 4 at 7 p.m. while competing in a rematch against UC Irvine on Saturday, Mar. 5 with a 7 p.m. slated start time.
