Box Score IRVINE, Calif. - The Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball team returned to its winning ways on Thursday night, taking down the visiting Ottawa Braves 3-0.
Concordia took the first set 25-16 behind five kills from Jon Carlson and nine assists from setter
McLain Mott. Carlson finished with a team-high nine kills.
Mott dished out 12 more helpers in the second set. That number equaled the total amount of points the Braves were able to collect as CUI cruised 25-12 to take a 2-0 lead into the third.
Mott finished with a game-high 36 assists.
Owen Chun hit a productive .545 and finished with eight neatly-placed kills.Â
Uriel Batista added six kills and hit .667.Â
It was a back-and-forth battle in the third set until the Eagles pulled away in the middle of the match. Carlson sent another spike to an empty spot in the Ottawa defense and then
Liam Roberts helped throw up a wall to earn a block. CUI built a 16-12 lead and ultimately sealed the sweep with a kill by
Keegan Carey.
Freshman middle blocker
Max McCullough started the first two sets and added four kills and four blocks. Fellow freshman
Danny Smithers added 10 receptions while Carlson added 16 receptions along the back line.
The Eagles return to action on Friday with a quick turnaround match against No. 3 Long Beach State. CUI visits the Beach for a 7 p.m. match looking to notch its fourth win over a Top15 opponent this year.
