IRVINE, Calif. - After the clouds parted early into the morning, it was a beautiful day for the 6th annual Team 4 Titus & Ely meet held at Eagles Field at Concordia University Irvine. The Eagles were pumped up for a full day of competition at home in front of friends and family. Amongst the other schools that were invited to compete were local competitors and former coach Danny Bowman's current program at Northwest Nazarene.
This meet holds a special place in the hearts of all CUI track & field athletes due to the immense meaning behind the day of competition. This gathering of athletes is named in honor of Bowman's incredible sons, Titus and Ely, both of whom battle a rare genetic disease called Batten's. The Eagles marked the special occasion with great performances, new school records, a flurry of personal bests, and a national qualifying mark.
Madison Hergert's final home meet of her career showed her tenacity as she broke her school record in the 400m dash. She cleared her previously set record of 56.88 by a slim margin at 56.81, nonetheless an impressive feat.
There was no surprise that
Sarah Fajer would do something incredible on Saturday, but her accomplishments on the day were nothing short of remarkable. In the shot put event, her first mark of 13.88m was an impressive start to the event. However, it was only the start for Fajer when her fourth throw resulted in a 14.03m result—automatically qualifying her to compete at nationals in the event.
Wilson McLean gave his all throughout the whole meet, but in the 400m hurdles, his passion for the sport was on show. After setting the school record for the event last year, McLean chased after his own shadow, looking to further that outstanding record. He came up just shy of his previous time, but in an emotional showing, his teammates, adoring family, and friends could see just how much it meant to him to win the event.
Katie Fajer wanted a piece of the action, so she made sure to put on a clinic in the discus event. Her best mark of 44.58m helped earn her the event win, and she cleared the next thrower by almost over 3 meters!
Teammates
Angelique Antonini, JoriParadis, and
McKenna Wilson, battled together to record notable performances in the 5000m event. They secured the second, third, and fourth spots.
