IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University men's volleyball team were back in the gym in less than 24 hours to play against Stanford on Friday. The Eagles came out victorious with scores 25-22, 22-25, 27-25, 2-20, earning their first sweep over Stanford in program history.
The Eagles continue to shine with strategic hitting across the front row that are hit hard and high that cannot be touched on the other side to their opponents. Senior
Jonathan Carlson had himself an impressive night both offensively and defensively earning 15 kills, nine digs, and three block assists that came up big for the Eagles. Right side
Owen Chun continues to jump high with 14 kills while hitting above a .420 hitting percentage.
Uriel Batista finished with 12 kills and five blocks that helped CUI take the win over Stanford.
Senior
Logan Glave finished with seven kills and threw back a ball back on the Cardinal side for a block. Middles
Mason Mullins and
Max McCullough had eight kills combined and each a solo block.
Gil Herold came in to the match for two sets and made an immediate impact defensively with six blocks that went untouched on their opponents side.
Setter
McLain Mott had 45 assists making that his third match in a row with over 40 assists. Mott led the Eagles with 11 digs while
Danny Smithers laid out for seven.
The first set was back-and-forth as the teams continued to toggle with the score being tied 15 times in just the first set alone. Two kills from Chun closed out the first set by a close 25-22 over Stanford. The Cardinal took the biggest lead in the set second set with four points until the Eagles fought to come back with kills from three different players to bring it back within one. Stanford held CUI and did not allow them back into the set.
Stanford continued their momentum at the start of the third taking an early lead again. Just as Stanford thought they had this set leading 21-24, Mott went to the back line and served an ace and three hitting errors allowed the Green and Gold to tie the set at 25 a-piece. A service error and kill from Herold led to a 27-25 victory for the Eagles. Now the momentum switched to CUI and they ran with that until the end to take the fourth set and win over Stanford.
CUI will be back on the court Saturday, Mar. 5 as they look to take on UC Irvine in a rematch game in the CU Arena at 7 p.m.
