Eagle Bats Silenced by No. 5 Point Loma

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The CUI baseball team dropped both games of Saturday's non-conference doubleheader to #5 Point Loma, with their record falling to 9-6-1 on the season while remaining 3-1 in PacWest play.

Game 1: CUI 2, PLNU 5

The Green & Gold got out to an early 2-0 lead off the bat of Richard Castro, who hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season to right field in the top of the second inning. Unfortunately for the Eagles, that would turn out to be their only two runs on the day.

Starter Evan Larsen struck out 10 batters in 5.1 innings on the mound. The 6'5" right-hander leads CUI in punchouts on the season with 30, averaging 12.6 strikeouts per nine.

After running into a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth inning and allowing a run to score, Evan Larsen was relieved by Noah McBride. The southpaw was able to limit the damage by allowing one additional run to score to make it 5-2, where it would stay for the remainder of the game.

Colton Bulger has dominated his first five outings of the season, and he continued that with a scoreless eighth inning in relief for McBride. With Saturday's performance, Bulger now ranks top 25 in the nation with a 0.71 WHIP, having surrendered only one hit and zero walks through his first 5.2 innings this year. He also holds a team-best 0.00 ERA on the season.

Game 2: CUI 0, PLNU 13

The performance of the game came from PLNU's starting pitcher, Dylan Miller, who kept the Eagles hitless throughout the entire game. CUI's only base runner came in the first inning, when Michael Dixon walked on a full count and was subsequently thrown out trying to steal second base.

The Sea Lion offense was persistent, scoring in all but one of the seven innings. With the loss, starting pitcher Riley O'Sullivan fell to 2-1, while still maintaining an impressive 2.61 ERA on the season.

The two teams will complete the non-conference series at Eagles Field on Monday, March 7th, at 2:00 PM.
